The inner voice you live with

Self esteem is shaped less by your achievements and more by how you talk to yourself when no one is listening.

Many of the high functioning, accomplished people I work with describe a familiar pattern: they look great on paper and feel terrible in their own heads. Self esteem is not built by adding more accolades. It is built by changing the relationship you have with yourself.

Notice the voice

Before you can change a pattern, you have to see it. Pay attention to the language you use when you make a mistake, when you rest, when you fall short of your own expectations. That voice is shaping your nervous system.

Practice a kinder default

A kinder inner voice is not soft, it is precise. It tells the truth without piling on. It separates what happened from what it means about you. With practice, it becomes the voice you reach for first.
