The quiet practice of presence
Presence is not a feeling you wait for, it is a skill you build. Here is how I teach clients to come back to the moment they are actually in.
Most of the suffering my clients describe happens in two places: a future that has not arrived and a past they cannot edit. Presence is the practice of meeting the moment that is actually here, which is the only place anything changes.
Start with the senses
The body is always in the present. When the mind drifts into rumination or worry, the fastest way back is through what you can see, hear, feel, and touch. Name five things in your environment. Notice the temperature of the air. Feel your feet on the floor.
Make it small and frequent
- One slow breath before opening your laptop.
- A pause at red lights instead of reaching for your phone.
- Thirty seconds of stillness before your first sip of coffee.
Presence is not a retreat you take once a year, it is the small moments you reclaim across the day.
